About Bloomsbury House

Hello, we're Annie and James

Bloomsbury House is rather special to us.

We fell in love with this old house in the heart of Sheringham and could see straight away that it had wonderful character, history and good bones. It had a story to tell, and we wanted to bring it back to life.

So that's what we did.

For three years we worked on the house, carefully keeping the things we loved and giving it a new lease of life. Along the way we've filled it with paintings, colour, books, old treasures and things we've collected simply because we love them.

I'm an artist, so you'll find quite a lot of my work around the house too. My studio is at Blanefield in Beeston Regis, just a short distance away, where I paint and run my small, relaxed art workshops.

I also offer residential art holidays at Bloomsbury House, bringing together a few days by the sea, time in the studio, good company and the chance to explore North Norfolk.

A house with a story

Bloomsbury House was originally built for Olive Edis, the pioneering photographer who lived and worked in Sheringham. She was a remarkable woman, a photographer, inventor and businesswoman, and the first woman to be elected President of the Royal Photographic Society.

We love knowing that she once lived here.

There's something rather wonderful about a house carrying little pieces of the people who have lived in it before. We've added a few of our own along the way, and hope you'll enjoy discovering them.

Full of colour, character and things we love, Bloomsbury House is made for long lunches, seaside walks, lazy mornings and time together.

And that's exactly how we want it to feel.

Why Sheringham?

James was born and bred in Norfolk, and I've come to feel completely at home here too. I grew up in Musselburgh, a seaside town in Scotland, so perhaps the sea was always going to be part of the story.

We've lived in North Norfolk for many years and still love exploring it.

Sheringham has that wonderful feeling of being somewhere you can arrive, park the car and immediately feel you've gone on holiday.

The sea is just a few minutes away. There are independent shops, lovely cafés, pubs, restaurants, the steam railway, the theatre and miles of coast and countryside to explore.

And then there are the little things we love.

A walk along the beach to Cromer.

Coffee at West Runton.

Fish and chips by the sea.

Watching the steam train arrive.

Finding something you didn't know you were looking for in one of the little independent shops.

Or simply sitting somewhere beautiful and watching the weather change.

That's North Norfolk for us.

We're nearby

We live about five minutes away, so we're close by if you need us, while Bloomsbury House gives you plenty of space to enjoy your time here.

We look after the house ourselves because we care about it. We want you to arrive to a house that feels loved, looked after and ready for you.

And if there's something you need, you'll be talking to Annie and James.

What we hope for you

More than anything, we want Bloomsbury House to be somewhere you can properly relax.

Come with your family.

Bring the dog.

Come for a week, a long weekend or simply because you fancy a few days by the sea.

Explore everything North Norfolk has to offer. Walk miles, catch trains, visit stately homes and eat your way around the coast.

Or close the door, make a cup of tea, curl up with a book and do absolutely nothing.

Both are excellent holidays.
